CLARE BALDING KICK-STARTS CAREERS


npower What’s Your Goal? launches, inspiring young people to shoot to the top of the football industry

TODAY, Clare Balding announces she is leading a line-up of 11 successful women from the world of sport to launch npower What’sYour Goal?, an initiative that offers young people once-in-a-lifetime opportunities in the football industry.

For the 2013 campaign, Clare Balding has joined forces with high profile female professionals who have shot to the top of their game and enjoyed success within the world of football.  The likes of Jacqui Oatley and Kelly Smith will join Clare in a bid to encourage more girls and boys to think about a career in the nation’s favourite sport and to continue to boost the profile of sportswomen in the UK, following the success of last year’s Games.

The initiative is designed to encourage teens across the UK to start thinking about their careers.  Clare Balding and the What’s Your Goal? mentors will showcase the vast and varied jobs available to young people, both on and off the football pitch, demonstrating the range of employment opportunities available for both men and women alike.

Working in partnership with The Football League, npower is searching for a ‘dream team’ of 11 ambitious and enthusiastic youngsters to spend a day being mentored by one of the successful sportswomen who have come on board to offer their time, knowledge, and support to the programme, offering them invaluable experience.

Having demonstrated why they should be chosen for one of the coveted roles with a CV and video application,  the 11 lucky youngsters will be thrown straight into the action. One budding commentator will get to give their play-by-play account of the match alongside Jacqui Oatley at the Championship Play-off Final, while another will learn what it takes to be a top TV presenter with Clare Balding. Other roles up for grabs include reporting on all the action with Daily Mail sports reporter Laura Williamson and receiving first class professional football training with Arsenal Ladies and Team GB’s Kelly Smith.

In addition, young people can also get the chance to shadow: Everton U17s Ladies Manager Mo Marley, Sheffield United Goalkeeping Coach Leanne Hall, Exercise Scientist for Birmingham Ladies Ellie Maybury, Sports Photographer Georgie Gillard, The Football League’s most senior female referee Sasa Ihringova, MD at St George’s Park Julie Harrington and Ipswich FC Sales Manager Rosie Richardson.

Clare Balding says:
2012 was an amazing year for sporting achievement in the UK, especially for women, so I am delighted that npower will be continuing to keep up the momentum in 2013 and championing female athletes with What’s Your Goal?

“Football is one of the most popular sport for women, yet it is still perceived to be a man’s game, which is why it is important that young people have strong female role models to look up to who inspire them to kick-start their careers. We are looking for  11 youngsters to take up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and apply for one of the many roles on offer.

“During my career as a TV presenter,  I have been privileged to present some of the world’s best sporting events. I am looking forward to mentoring a young person and providing them with invaluable, first-hand experience in the world of sport.”

Clare McDougall, npower’s head of education and community, adds:
“Last year’s sporting success had a real impact on young people’s perceptions of female athletes. We want to continue this with What’s Your Goal? and encourage young people to think about a career within the football industry by providing them with a line up of 11 inspirational and successful women from the world of sport.

“However, this is not a programme exclusively for girls; with mentors like Clare Balding, Jacqui Oatley and Kelly Smith, who are hugely successful in their roles, we are offering all young people real opportunities to gain valuable skill and experience, which is so integral to employers when looking for employees.”

Giving more young people across the UK a chance to try something new, What’s Your Goal? 2013 will, again, see npower working with all 72 clubs in The Football League to offer over 350 valuable work experience placements to students in Years 10 – 11 in their local areas, with an exciting and unique opportunity at Leyton Orient FC.

Students in Years 7 – 11 are invited to apply for the chance to spend a day shadowing one of the high profile experts such as Clare Balding, by simply filling out a job application which is downloadable at www.npower.com/whatsyourgoal.

WALLACE BARES ALL FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY
npower reveals a saucy TV appearance from Wallace and Gromit

WALLACE and Gromit fans glimpse more of their favourite animated character than they ever have before in npower’s first advert starring the duo.

It’s the first time family favourite has appeared in the buff but he’s spared his blushes by an enterprising Gromit.

In the 30 second npower advert Wallace suffers the ultimate bathroom hardship when the pair’s home boiler breaks down and his hot shower runs cold. A startled Wallace turns to Gromit for his help. The clever hound gets on the ‘dog and bone’ and calls out npower’s hometeam to replace the boiler.

Wallace’s appearance marks the first of a series of npower adverts starring the duo that will appear on screen for the next two years. Each ad will be characterised by the famous pair doing what they do best and inventing hair brained schemes to help their home be more energy efficient.

The ad, which airs on the evening of Saturday 28th March, aims to highlight how Britain’s brightest energy company is helping make energy efficiency easy and fun.

Joan Coe, head of brand communications, npower, comments: “Wallace and Gromit are the most famous film pairing in Britain. Their cosy personas and ‘have a go’ approach to energy efficiency is what we need to help people see how simple it is to make small changes but a big difference to their energy bills.”

Bil Bungay, founder of advertising agency BMB, adds: “Wallace was superb to work with, he admitted to having laid off the Wensleydale for a couple of weeks prior to the shoot and it showed. He looked pretty buffed for his age.”

‘Exposing’ the figures behind the advert

• The npower hometeam van has suspension, moveable windscreen wipers, head lights that can be wired in for night driving shots, hinged doors and wind up and down windows
• 10lbs of modelling clay were used to create the advert
• The advert took five weeks to shoot
• Wallace and Gromit both appear in the advert, along with a new character – hometeam Bob
• Look out for the pictures in the hallway when Wallace walks downstairs
• Special effects include colouring Perspex rod with glass paint to give the illusion of glowing coal
• The coal in the coal cellar is real though
• The shower is authentic brass
• The Wallace and Gromit bathroom has never been seen before on screen
• The shower curtain is made from actual shower curtain material which had to be wired at the bottom for animation purposes
• The toothbrush and scrubber brush are made from paintbrush hair. The toothpaste is called Mc Plaque
• The soap suds are glass and Perspex clear balls mixed with hair gel and KY Jelly
• The shower is never over Wallace’s head: it’s an optical illusion

THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT, THE FUTURE’S GREEN
The planet’s in safe hands as children grasp energy issues


LONDON February 23RD, 2009 – Leading energy company npower is investing in the next generation of bright green hopes as it launches Little Green Fingers – a campaign to help primary school children learn about the potential of renewable energy through the science of gardening.

npower is offering 50 schools solar panelled greenhouses for schools keen to get green - and research shows children are eager to learn about the big eco issues of the day. When asked about their understanding on energy issues, savvy seven-year-olds revealed heartening responses: 98% of kids know they should always turn lights off and 93% have the ‘techno-how’ to take their computers off standby to save electricity.

But there is still more to learn, with the Government striving to hit 20% of UK power being generated by renewables by 2020, one third (31%) of the next generation of home owners don’t understand what the term ‘renewable energy’ means.

npower commissioned the research to launch Little Green Fingers, an inspiring initiative designed to help four to seven year-olds learn about natural and renewable energy through the science of gardening. The programme will award 50 schools an eco-friendly, solar heated greenhouse to highlight how the earth’s energy gives plants the power to grow. Schools and families across the UK will be able to benefit from engaging teaching resources and how to guides and watch video clips which will help to bring the power of the earth’s energy to life for children in a fun, hand on way.

Baby Brainboxes
• Almost 70% of children know that the sun and wind can make power – but they don’t know exactly how!
• Up to half (49.8%) understand that solar panels can collect energy from the sun and turn it into power
• 88% of kids know that wind turbines create power for our homes

Confused kids
• But kids don’t always get it right - one in ten even think energy makes them tired!

Former Blue Peter presenter Zoe Salmon, who launches the campaign for npower today, says: ‘Making science inspirational and getting to grips with natural and renewable energy has never been more pressing. That’s why I’m out in the garden for npower’s Little Green Fingers campaign to help under-7s learn about energy and growing in the way they learn best - hands on and hands dirty!’

NPOWER IN POLE POSITION TO FIND TOMORROW’S FUTURE LEADERS
UK WIDE SEARCH FOR YOUNG ANTARCTIC EXPLORERS


LONDON February 19th, 2009 – As energy company npower sets out on its latest mission to explore the potential of renewable power in Antarctica, it launches a recruitment drive to find a team of intrepid youngsters who’ll set out on a mission to save the last great wilderness on earth.

The expedition, in winter 2010, will be lead by polar explorer Robert Swan OBE. As he embarks upon this year’s two week mission to Bellinghausen, Antarctica, Swan is joined by ten npower employees who, having completed a rigorous selection process, will leave their company call centres, power stations and offices across Britain for the trip of a life time.

Swan, aged 52, is a seasoned explorer having first docked on the Earth’s southernmost continent in 1984, and becoming the first man to walk to both the North and South poles in 1989. npower joined Swan’s Antarctic mission in 2008 when it equipped him with a wind turbine and solar panels, helping him also become the first person to live powered solely by renewable energy in the harshest environment on earth. Renewables experiments in Antarctica aim to prove the possibility of harnessing the elements to power homes and work places in more clement conditions.

Future Leaders has been developed by 2041 and npower to find the next generation of Robert Swans; young people with drive and passion, committed to learning about climate change and discovering new solutions to tackle its harmful effects. All 18-23 year olds nationwide are invited to put themselves forward as a potential Future Leader. Robert Swan and npower will select Future Leaders who will visit Antarctica in 2010 to see the effects of climate change at its raw edge and understand the potential of renewable power. Each Future Leader will be inspired to instigate climate awareness among their peers upon their return to the UK.

Robert Swan says, “Our aim is to find a group of passionate environmental advocates whose experiences in Antarctica will spur them to ignite climate change awareness among their peers. We’re looking for passionate young people who want to make a difference and who are excited by the potential of renewable energy to power our futures. Nowhere is environmental damage more evident than in Antarctica so by taking npower employees there in 2009, and the Future Leaders in 2010, I’m confident we can start to make a real change to the public perception of climate change and eventually see widespread use of renewable energy.”

• The 'English Al Gore', Robert Swan is a prominent environmental campaigner and polar explorer who has spent his life working towards preservation of the Antarctic wilderness and promoting recycling, renewable energy and sustainability to combat the effects of global warming
• In 1992, Robert spent 8 years in the Antarctic cleaning up over 1,500 tonnes of scrap metal on the Russian base. With the current Antarctic mining treaty terminating in 2041, Robert is calling for people to investigate renewable energy so that they can find alternatives so that the fragile polar environment is left unharmed
