(March 11, 2012) BRITISH BEACHES ARE FACING A PLASTIC BOTTLE CRISIS
1.5m plastic bottles are found on British beaches every year
To mark the launch of Climate Week 2012 in the UK, SodaStream has created a 26 foot plastic bottle sculpture to highlight the issue of plastic bottle waste, and its devastating effects on UK coastlines.
The structure, unveiled by Peter Andre on Brighton Beach was designed to bring to life shocking statistics that reveal an estimated 13 billion plastic bottles are used each year, with 1.5 million of these plastic drinks bottles found wasted on beaches across the UK.[i]
Research commissioned by SodaStream, reveals that Brits hugely underestimate the amount of bottle waste they generate; with 42% of adults believing that their family uses between 1-5 bottles a week when the actual figure is over double that.[1]
SodaStream is a supporting partner of Climate Week 2012 [12th to 18th March], the annual event dedicated to combating climate change in the UK. As an Active Green product, SodaStream helps combat climate change and promotes ‘precycling’ – the practice of reducing waste before recycling is necessary in the first place.
As a local Brighton resident, Peter Andre knows how important a clean beach is to the community: “Beaches all over the UK are full of plastic bottle waste and it’s time to take action. I grew up by the beach and have seen from personal experience the horrible effect that plastic litter has on our environment. Not only is it an eyesore, it harms wildlife and is a health hazard to our kids. I’m a big fan of Sodastream and it makes sense to make my fizzy drinks like that rather than buying lots of plastic bottles.”
Fiona Hope, Managing Director of SodaStream UK says: “SodaStream is a really practical solution for reducing a family’s environmental impact. It doesn’t make sense any more to lug plastic fizzy drinks bottles back from the supermarket when you can fizz tap water and flavour it at home! We’re partnering with Climate Week to help raise awareness of the growing issue of plastic bottles and hoping this giant bottle will inspire the public to also take practical action to reduce their consumption of single use plastic bottles.
UK beaches are wonderful places and need to be kept free of plastic bottle waste, so it’s fantastic to have Peter Andre on board. His passion to retain the beauty of his local beach is evident, and we’re sure will help to raise awareness.”
SodaStream home drinks makers can help to reduce the amount of single-use plastic bottle waste. With one SodaStream reusable carbonating bottle estimated to save the environment from 2,000 bottles and cans in three years, using a SodaStream machine can help consumers take a step towards a more sustainable future.
